Special Education

The Kaukauna Area School District provides a wide range of education opportunities for students (ages 3 through 21) that reside within the geographical boundaries of the district. Some students have varied academic, social, or emotional needs that are served through a variety of programs; these are our special education programs.

All students are provided with a district-approved curriculum at each age/grade level in a general education classroom. When students fail to make what is regarded as "typical" progress for their age/grade level, the classroom teacher and other staff members in the school setting begin to explore other programs to address that particular student's needs through the "Response to Intervention" and "Student Support Teams" (SST) process. These processes may lead to programs from ELL and at-risk programming to more intensive interventions, such as referrals for Special Education or Section 504.

Special education is the education of students which addresses and complies with the student's individual differences and needs. Special education services include specially-designed instruction, at no cost to the parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability, such as:

  • Instruction conducted in the classroom, in the home, in hospitals and institutions, and in other settings
  • Instruction in physical education
  • Speech-language pathology services, or any other related service, if the services consist of specially designed instruction, at no cost to the parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability, and is considered special education rather than a related service under Wisconsin standards
  • Travel training if it consists of specially-designed instruction, at no cost to the parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability
  • Vocational education if it consists of specially-designed instruction, at no cost to the parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with disability
